Darren and I were delighted to join Ohnais Basharat to kick off season 2 of The Legal Loop podcast.
In this special, two-part episode we discussed:
The Legal MBA Book
The story behind the book "The Legal MBA Essentials", which helps lawyers master the business of law.
It covers how law firms make money, how marketing, strategy and operations should integrate with each other, and the importance of consistency across these different elements of a modern law firm.
The book aims to fill the gap in business education for lawyers, which is not typically covered in law school or early stages of a training contract.
Leadership and Strategy in Law
Our discussion emphasises the distinction between leadership and management. Leadership is about doing the right things, while management is about doing things right.
A (frankly, over-extended) jungle-based metaphor is used to explain this distinction: managers are sharpening tools and optimising processes, while leaders are looking out for the right path to take.
Leadership requires breadth rather than depth, understanding how different areas of a law firm hang together.
Modern Skills for Future Lawyers
We highlight the importance of commercial awareness and practical understanding of how law firms operate as businesses.
We encourage junior lawyers to take ownership of their career paths, understand the business side of law, and develop skills that go beyond technical legal knowledge.
And we encourage people to lean into their 'unfair advantage'. For example, by hosting a podcast and perhaps calling it The Legal Loop 🙂
Innovation and Future of the Legal Industry
The final segment of the podcast focuses on innovation and the future of the legal industry.
We discuss the need for law firms to adapt to changes, embrace new technologies, and continuously improve their operations to stay competitive.
Junior lawyers have a great opportunity to embrace this change to accelerate their careers.
